It wasn't all that long ago that the Wine Pecan and Antique festival in Camp Verde was on the ropes.

But then two things happened that raised the event from the ashes.

First, there was a valley wide awaking of the wine industry, started first by winemakers themselves and eventually picked up by enthusiasts who formed the Verde Valley Wine Consortium and took it to new heights.

Then there was Steve and Barbara Goetting, owners of the Horn Saloon in Camp Verde, who three years ago saw an event with the potential of becoming one of the largest annual events in the valley and gave it the shot in the arm it needed.

This year, the 12th annual Pecan, Wine and Antique Festival will kick off on Friday, Feb. 17 for three days of fun.

Sponsors this year include the Horn Saloon, Cliff Castle Casino and Camp Verde's first art venue, The White Hills Gallery.

Last year over 3,000 attended. According to Goetting the interest has grown substantially.

"The festival is growing along side of interest in wine in general and Verde Valley wines in particular," says Goetting.

This year, nearly every major winery and winemaker in the Verde Valley will be represented, including Jerome Winery, Alcantara, Stronghold, Frietas, Oak Creek and Javalina Leap, along with other Arizona wineries including Pillsbury, Kokopelli and Bitter Creek.

But, as Goetting is quick to point out, the festival is not all about wine.

There will be plenty of antique vendors, lots and lots of music, an antique car show courtesy of the Lions Club, Native American dancers, pecan judging, plenty of food and even a pecan pancake breakfast ($5 adult, $3 kids) on Saturday morning from 7 to 10 a.m. for those who like an early start.

There will also be an added emphasis this year on the arts, with new displays from several local artists, courtesy of the White Hills Galley

"Art will be a new addition and play a bigger part," says Goetting, "We plan to have enough going on between the art, antiques, music and the wine so everyone can spend the day here, not just grab a couple glasses and leave. It's the perfect way to while away a day in beautiful Camp Verde."

Tickets are $12.50 per person and include five tasting tickets and a commemorative wine glass. Additional tasting tickets are 6 for $5. There is a $5 admission discount for VV Wine Consortium members.

In addition a $15 wristband will also be sold that includes admission to Fort Verde, which will be holding their annual Buffalo Solders event, honor the Black soldiers who served during the Indian Wars.

The festival, which is held at the Camp Verde Community Center and the surrounding grounds, at the corner of Main Street and Hollamon Street, is open from noon to 6 p.m. of Friday, Feb. 17, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb.19.
